Early Childhood Dentistry in Avondale

Children’s dentistry is important for so many reasons. Your child’s first teeth need to be carefully protected, and this is the main reason why it is never too early for them to experience coming to the dentist.

Usually, children will be ready for their first check-up between 2 and 3 years of age, but bringing kids in for your appointment or even the appointments of older siblings will help familiarise them with the dental environment. This will help them be more relaxed when it is their turn, and they are less likely to grow up with anxiety about going to the dentist.

Another added benefit of getting started early is that we can identify and possibly resolve problems that might otherwise not be recognised until later years, making them more costly to treat.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

You may think baby teeth don't matter because they are not permanent. Your child will get adult teeth later on. The reality is much different. Below, your Avondale dentist shares just a few reasons why baby teeth matter.

General Development

Baby teeth should always remain until it's time for them to fall out. They help your child learn proper speech and how to move the mouth correctly.

Place Holders

Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth and should remain until it's time to go. If they are lost too soon, this can interfere with how adult teeth erupt on the gum.

Nutrition Helpers

Baby teeth erupt so your child can learn to chew properly and enjoy their meals. If these early teeth are lost too soon, it can impact chewing and digestion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Young girl at dentist | Paediatric Dentistry Avondale AucklandWe welcome our littlest patients beginning at age 2 to 3, but you are always welcome to bring your child to your visits. This helps even very small children become familiar with the dental clinic and our staff.

We take a special interest in children's dentistry because developing good dental habits and regular visits can mean a healthier smile as an adult.

Why Bring Your Child to the Dentist

We make early visits fun for kids by encouraging their curiosity and wonder with learning. We demonstrate proper brushing and flossing both for kids in our clinic and in our community. Not only is this essential to educate kids, but it is also fun for our dentists and team. Many of our staff are parents themselves, making them naturals when it comes to working with children of all ages.

We also prioritise communication with parents and discuss what to expect as your child grows.

  • Healthy nutrition
  • Behaviour modification (thumb sucking)
  • Developmental milestones
  • Home dental care

As a family practice, we adjust our treatment to meet your child’s needs and look forward to meeting their kids someday.

Give us a call to arrange your child’s first check-up and clean. We look forward to looking after your entire family.

At Avondale Dental Centre, we provide comprehensive treatments for every age group, including children.

And for children, we offer a wide range of services, including orthodontics. So, should your child need orthodontic treatment, you’ll not have to visit another dentist or specialist for interceptive orthodontics, traditional braces, or Invisalign in Avondale.

Our children’s dentistry includes:

  • Preventive Dentistry: dental check-ups, teeth cleans, fissure sealants and fluoride treatments
  • General Dentistry: Tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, emergency dentistry, and root canal therapy

We like to see children before the age of three. This allows your Avondale dentist to assess their teeth and gums and ensure everything is developing correctly. After each visit, the dentist will share findings with you and talk to you about treatment options if an oral health issue is uncovered.

Besides dentistry, we also offer tips for optimal at-home care, including:

  • How to clean a young child’s teeth
  • When your child can clean their teeth independently
  • Pacifier and thumb-sucking advice
  • Dietary and nutrition tips

Why Baby Teeth Are So Important

Parents often wonder why they should put so much care into small teeth that will fall out in the future. The truth is that primary or baby teeth are essential to your child's oral development as they have a few important jobs to do before they fall out:

  • Hold space and guide future incoming adult teeth
  • Help your child form and speak their first words
  • Introduce your little one to the joys of solid foods

If your child has a tooth emergency, don't hesitate to contact the caring dental team at Avondale Dental Centre.

Avondale Dental Centre aims to make every patient experience pleasant and stress-free, especially for our youngest patients.

It's natural for your little one to feel nervous about visiting the dentist, and our team works together to create a fun and upbeat environment where your child can receive dental care.

However, parents can take a few steps at home to make the situation as comfortable and stress-free for their children as possible.

Tips for Creating Positive Dental Experiences for Children

To start encouraging positive feelings about the dentist, you can speak positively about the upcoming visit to the dental clinic at home with your child, even if you feel nervous or anxious about your own dental visits.

Use media, stories about the dentist, or colouring pages to help your child understand what will occur during their dental visit. This way, when they arrive at their Avondale children's dentist for their booking, it's not scary.

Consider bringing your child to your dental teeth clean and check-up so they can see what happens and understand that it's nothing to be afraid of.

We'd like to invite you to contact Avondale Dental Centre if it's time for your child's next dental visit. We love building positive relationships with children to help them develop happy and healthy smiles!

Believe it or not, oral care starts for children before their first teeth arrive!

As a parent, you play a crucial role in your infant's oral care routine. Start by gently wiping their gums with a warm cloth after feedings. This simple act removes any remaining bacteria and helps your little one get used to the idea of oral care.

When their first teeth arrive, you can begin brushing them with a soft, infant toothbrush. You can also use a pea-sized amount of infant toothpaste that is safe to swallow.

Create Healthy Oral Habits for Your Child

Parents can start incorporating fluoride toothpaste into their children's brushing and flossing routine when they can safely spit out toothpaste, around age three or four.

Children will need supervision and assistance brushing and flossing their teeth until around seven or eight years old.

Even when they begin to brush and floss on their own, parents should continue to check in periodically to ensure they are sufficiently cleaning their teeth and removing the plaque buildup that causes tooth decay and cavities.

Your Avondale children's dentist can support your efforts at home by providing routine check-ups for your child every six months. Children should begin visiting their dentist routinely around age two or three when they can feel comfortable sitting in the dental chair.

Contact Avondale Dental Centre if it's time for your little one's next dental appointment.

Why Baby (Primary) Teeth Are Important

Primary teeth, also called baby teeth, may seem disposable. After all, they are going to fall out anyway, right? In fact, keeping baby teeth free from decay and extraction is essential to the development of your child’s adult smile.

Primary teeth play an important role in development by developing the blueprint for permanent teeth and maintaining adequate space.

Eating a healthy diet is also essential to your child’s health, and painful or missing teeth make it a challenge to eat a varied diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Children's Dentistry

We offer treatment to children of all ages, including check-ups and cleans, fissure sealants to prevent decay, restorations to fill cavities, mouth guards, children and teenage orthodontics and dental x-rays.

We are happy to discuss and offer any assistance with your child’s individual needs.

Early Childhood Orthodontics

Modern dentistry has a greater understanding of how the teeth and jaw function together. Palatal expanders and space maintainers can eliminate the need for orthodontic extractions in the future.

Early orthodontics is designed to address developmental and growth problems that arise when inadequate space in the upper or lower jaw prevents teeth from proper alignment. It may also reduce the treatment time necessary in the future as your child becomes a teen or young adult.

We Welcome Kids of All Ages at Avondale Dental Centre

From your toddler to your adult university student, our dentists, Dr Najar, Dr Crum and Dr Nekrutenk, will comfort your child and treat them with the same gentle care we want for our own children. Contact our dental clinic if you would like to book a dental appointment for your child.
