TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. The shortened version (or TMD) is commonly used to describe disorders of these hinge-like joints, which connect the lower jaw to the skull.

Bruxism is a condition that causes patients to grind and clench their teeth during sleep. Sometimes TMJ results from bruxism, or bruxism aggravates TMJ, which is how these conditions are connected.

Your dentist in Avondale offers treatment options to help combat the symptoms of both.

All patients and situations are different, so results and outcomes may vary.

Bruxism Treatment in Avondale

Typically, we treat bruxism with a nightguard. This is a custom appliance worn over the teeth at night. The appliance gently pushes the lower jaw forward to help prevent teeth grinding.

If bruxism is causing your TMJ/TMD, the appliance can give your jaw joints the rest they need and potentially eliminate symptoms.

TMJ treatment may include any of the following:

  • A Nightguard to Reduce Bruxism
  • Orthodontic Treatment to Align Your Bite
  • Bite Levelling to Take Pressure Off Your Jaw Joints
  • Muscle Relaxing Therapies to Give the Joints a Rest

In severe cases, TMJ/TMD may need surgical intervention.

However, A study published in the Australian Journal of General Practice concluded the following on TMD/TMJ:

“Conservative management involving non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies is effective in the majority of cases.”

Bruxism symptoms may include excessive muscle in front of the ears, upper body and head pain, tooth breakage, and/or jaw joint pain.

TMJ symptoms include many of the same signs, but you may also notice a clicking or popping sound in the joints when you yawn or chew.

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, it’s essential to talk to your dentist. We can evaluate the signs, check your teeth, and determine whether you should move forward with one or more of our treatments.
