What should I expect during an IV sedation procedure?

Whether you suffer from dental anxiety or need extensive dental treatment, IV sedation dentistry may be a viable option to help you get the dental care you deserve. At Avondale Dental Centre, we offer IV sedation dentistry to our patients for various reasons. You may be wondering what to expect during an IV sedation procedure. Here’s what you need to know if you want to learn more.

What to Expect During an IV Sedation Procedure

IV sedation is a safe and effective way to receive necessary dental treatment. Once our dental team has determined you are a candidate for IV sedation, this is what you can expect:

1. First, we will numb your hand before inserting the IV line.

2. Next, we will connect the IV line to the IV solution; as the IV sedative enters your bloodstream, you will quickly feel relaxed.

3. We will continuously monitor your blood pressure, breathing and heart rate during your dental procedure and adjust the sedative accordingly.

4. You will feel groggy once your dental procedure is over and probably won’t remember much.

5. You will need a friend or relative to drive you home, and you may feel drowsy for up to 24 hours after IV sedation. Plan to rest for the day.
